The definition of commitment is "the state or quality of being dedicated to a cause, activity, etc." Achieving our goals takes commitment.
Years ago I made a commitment to finally learn how to swim. I can float and do something with my feet and hands that resembles swimming, and make it across from one side of a pool to the other, but I really wanted to learn how to swim so I could conquer my fear of large bodies of water. So, I signed up for adult swim classes at the YMCA (more than once), and set out to fulfill this commitment to myself. Well, I'm embarrassed to say that more than 15 years later and with only a handful of lessons under my belt, I still have NOT achieved this goal.
The problem with making commitments oftentimes comes down to your why? If your goal is to transform your health this year, then why do you want to do this? Is it so that you can look good so people can give you compliments when you post your results on Instagram? Or Is it to live a long life that honors God and your temple? I have made commitments to myself that have failed repeatedly, because my reasons were skewed. But commitments that I have made to the Creator of all things, gives me the ability to continue day in and day out to accomplish what I have placed in His almighty hands to complete.
Here are my keys to keeping your commitments:
Consistency: This includes your daily habits with God (reading your Bible, meditation and prayer), and to your best health goals (E.g. walking daily, eating holistically, and getting your proper rest).
Accountability: Enlist the support of friends and/or family who will always tell you the truth about yourself.
Patience: Remember that change takes time. It’s a long journey, not a weekend staycation.
Stay Hopeful!
